How can we promote Flourishing for All?

Date: Monday 25th September 2017

Time: 7pm to 9pm

Venue: Friendship Cafe, Chequers Bridge, Painswick Road, Gloucester GL4 6PR

Starting at 7pm at the Friendship Cafe, Chequers Bridge, Painswick Road, Gloucester, the evening promises to be an important, community building experience. Please come and join in the conversation on creating communities where all can flourish.

Members of the Spirit of Peace team will give a brief update on SoP's work and partners at home and abroad. The main focus of the evening will then be on an aspect of the Pathways for Human Flourishing programme, which is being developed.

Heather Jane Ozanne and Milly Sinclair are excited to share Spirit of Peace's ground-breaking work and research on Human Flourishing. This will be an interactive session exploring the questions such as:

  • What is Human Flourishing?
  • Can a community truly flourish at the expense of another?
  • As a group of diverse cultures and backgrounds, what are we already doing to encourage mutual flourishing in our communities in Gloucestershire?
  • What could we do practically to support this even more?

Heather-Jane, CEO of Spirit of Peace recounts, "Wherever we have presented this topic across the UK it has stimulated thoughtful discussion and actions. We are excited to be exploring this inspiring subject within the context of the Friendship Café, a place which contributes so much to the flourishing of individuals and communities in Gloucester".

We are pleased that the mock mayor of Barton, Mark Cummings, will be addressing us and lighting our peace candle.

There is plenty of parking at the venue. Everyone is warmly invited to bring food to share, which does not contain alcohol or meat, to share.

Admission is free, however, donations are invited for the ongoing work of Spirit of Peace and our new Essence of Peace candles will be on sale.

Spirit of Peace Community Bring & Share Supper

Is there really a them?

Date: Monday 22nd May 2017

Time: 7pm to 9pm

Venue: Friendship Cafe, Chequers Bridge, Painswick Road, Gloucester GL4 6PR

Starting at 7pm at the Friendship Cafe, Chequers Bridge, Painswick Road, Gloucester, the evening promises to be an important and inspirational experience.

We are delighted to be welcoming Ben Yeger from the organisation Combatants for Peace, which brings together Israeli and Palestinian ex-combatants to work for peace.

From the prism of his personal experience Ben will address the following question: Are we separate entities or intrinsically interconnected with all things and beings? Our education encourages a sense of separation of "Us from Them" in Human-to-Human, Human to Nature and Human to Spirit relationships. But is this true?

Ben grew up in Israel with the narrative that "I have an enemy who wants me destroyed, who I must fight, to protect myself." An ex-combatant in the Israeli army, over the last 9 years Ben has been working with the 'Enemy', exploring the possibility that everything is interconnected and interdependent and that this story isn't true. There is no "Them" - only "We".

In this talk, he shares his personal story of how he came to this realization. He will also show a trailer for the film 'Disturbing the Peace' which focusses on the work of the ex-combatants. Ben Yeger is the European representative of Combatants for Peace (www.cfpeace.org) and Director of Moving Conflicts (www.movingconflicts.org). He was a TEDx speaker in Warwick in 2013: https://youtu.be/Qzvopt5gwtg

There is plenty of parking at the venue. Everyone is warmly invited to bring food to share, which does not contain alcohol or meat, to share.

Admission is free; however, donations are invited for the ongoing work of Spirit of Peace and Combatants for Peace.

SOMERSET NR BATH: Retreat: SOUL CONVERSATIONS - Please note now postponed

Date: 21-23 November 2014

Venue: The Ammerdown Centre , Radstock Nr Bath

"Human conversation is the most ancient and easiest way to cultivate the conditions for change." (Margaret J Wheatley)

Most conversations are enjoyable social meetings but some conversations carry us to a deeper, more numinous place. We call these deep, transforming conversations "soul conversations". They involve a process of deep listening, awareness and openness, together with a sense of being guided by the questions rather than the solutions. As well as deepening personal connections these conversations can become a powerful tool for personal and social transformation and healing.

Is it possible to consciously learn how to have Soul Conversations? The answer is a resounding Yes! There are in fact many methods for this form of conversation, some of which have been developed and used to bring about resolution in situations of conflict.

There follows a brief report on the first few years of the Stroud, Spirit of Peace Community Conversation: Some years ago friends of mine acquired a property near Stroud. The garden was large and completely neglected. They wanted to make a large pond, and somehow got hold of a dilapidated digger and dug a wide hole. Then they waited - and within a year that hole had filled with water; vegetation grew all around the sides- bull-rushes, marsh marigolds and watercress. In the spring it became the home for a family of ducks. Nature, time and good intention had created something worthwhile and beautiful.

And so it seems, that is what is happening in the Spirit of Peace Meetings that have been taking place in Stroud almost every month now, for the last three or four years. Generally about twenty people sit in a circle. About four to six Muslims from Gloucester drive over after a long working day. The candle is lit and a Singing Bowl is sounded. There is often a topic. In the early days it was more about explaining the different festivals in the major religions at each season. Now the topics seem to be wider and more individual. For example "How can I be right, without making you wrong?" "What is belief?" "Is belief the same as faith?" "How does my Faith/faith help me in my life?"

Sometimes someone will open the evening with a short prepared introduction and then anyone can speak openly if they feel moved to do so- and most people in the circle do. It is a safe space, knowing that no one will interrupt or criticize.

Over the years, although there are always new people coming and going into the meetings, a strong feeling of respect and acceptance is present and genuine friendship and understanding.

Many find it a relief to be able to express themselves openly at such a deep and personal level. We end after an hour and a half, with a few refreshments - and a warm feeling that we have all experienced a step towards understanding each other a bit more. By Alice, from Stroud
